Project description:

The E-Call project is involves the design and development of a demonstration / prototype system for

• streamlining the information flows between
  • emergency call centres (horizontally) and
  • emergency call centres and personnel at the scene of an incident (vertically)
• demonstrating how E-Call messages can be incorporated in the emergency call centre's workflow

For streamlining the information flows the project explores how existing emergency procedures can be captured in formal workflow modelling languages like BPEL (Business Process Execution Language). For the prototype / demonstration system the use of an Oracle BPEL engine is considered.

E-Call is an alarm system for cars and trucks. Based on sensor readings in a vehicle the system can determine if an accident has occured. If so, the system will automatically send an alarm message (via GSM cell phone network) to an emergency call centre. The message contains infromation about the vehicle's identity and position. One can imagine that based on the number of E-Call messages, their location (e.g. near tunnel) and the vehicles involved (e.g. trucks with hazardous cargo) the emergency call centre must initiate appropriate actions. The project expores various ways of incorporating E-Call messages in emergency procedures.
